COPPER MILL CONTROLS
Lane Xang Minerals Limited
is a member of the Oxiana Resources Group who operate the Sepon
Copper Project at Savannakhet Province in Laos, 40km from the Vietnam border. The project
is owned 100% by Oxiana and production commenced in early 2005. The
ore rate varies from 0.8 to 1.3 Mtpa and at its peak the mine is expected to
produce 60,000 tpa of copper.
Hired by Outokumpu, BEC were
responsible for all electrical design and commissioning related to the
installation of a primary ball mill and a smaller limestone mill. BEC also
provided project management for all electrical controls engineering.
The mill control panel included local
control and instrument display to ensure safe operation of instrumentation and sensing
devices.
The ambient temperature at the
minesite has extremes between 5°C and 45°C and humidty is high. The
climatic conditions coupled with fine abrasive dust and acidic mist from the
mine operations presented a challenge to BEC to ensure equipment was operational
24 hours every day of the year.
The control panel contained an Allen Bradley CompactLogix PLC system and
PanelView 1000 touch screen. To prevent the internal temperature from rising
above 50°C appropriate cooling was installed.
